Weight Loss and Glycemic Index

GI is now a very popular term in weight loss books and researches. It is not very evident that glycemic index and weight loss have something to do with each other. GI was first introduced to measure the blood sugar level for diabetes patients. But few experts opine that diabetes, obesity are very closely related though every obese need not be diabetic.

We will see how this glycemic index can be helpful in weight loss. Dieter should concentrate on having a diet with a foundation in the grains, breads and cereals group, five or more servings from the fruits and vegetables group, two servings from the milk group and two servings from the meat group

Glucose is give a value of 100 and other carbs are given a number relative to glucose. Some food items may have GI up to 140. Successful results are seen with following balanced diet plan. The diet should be low in total and saturated fats. Dieter should have grains, fruits & vegetables, dairy and meat or fish, in addition to being physically active can result in long lasting weight loss and improved health.

The effectiveness of low GI diet is not yet confirmed but it can reduce the LDL cholesterol levels by 10%.
